Solar Activated Air Conditioning System Announced by Hitachi


January 10 — A new solar activated air conditioning system has been announced by its developer, Hitachi Plant Technologies of Japan.

The system is designed to drive a refrigerator directly with thermal energy generated from a solar energy collector to obtain chilled water for air conditioning, according to the company.

Key to the system is a high-efficiency parabola trough-type solar energy collector, also developed by Hitachi, that tracks the sun automaticall with a parabolic refector while maintaining the position of the fluid-filled heat collector tubing at the focal point of the parabola.

Hitachi expects to begin selling the system in North America in 2015.
