Central AC, Heat Pump Shipments Show Mixed Results


Combined U.S. factory shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps in May climbed ahead of last year's comparable figures, but left current-year shipments lagging by some 17%.

May 2007 shipments totaled 739,647 units, reported the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI), the best monthly performance so far this year. Shipments were 8.5% ahead of May 2006, and slightly ahead of May 2005.

Year-to-date combined U.S. factory shipments were 2.6 million units, a decrease of 17% versus the same period last year.

Heat pump shipments for may totaled 198,911, a decrease of 4.6% from May 2006. Year-to-date heat pump shipments were 812,619, down 14% from the comparable period last year.
